Bauchi targets January for commencement of 2017 budget

By Musa Katagum, Bauchi

The Bauchi state Commissioner for Economic Planning Alh. Shehu Barau Ningi has hinted that 2017 Appropriation Bill may come into effect from the beginning of January, 2017.

Ningi dropped the hint on Friday in his office in Bauchi, saying “Governor Mohammed Abubakar wants to start the implementation of the budget by the second day of January 2017 in compliance with the current Change Mantra”.

He explained that “Ministries, Departments and Agencies have completed the defense of their proposals and other processes are almost done with except final touches to the Budget by State Executive Council and final presentation to Bauchi State House of Assembly (BAHA)for legislative approval.

The Economic Planning Commissioner did not say how much the state plans to spend in 2017,it would be recalled that about N135 billion was budgeted in 2016.

He stated that out of the N135 billion, the Recurrent Estimate was 65,498,808.456,while the Capital was N69,805,091,554.

But there are indications that the 2017 would be higher given the fact that a lot of cuts in the state government expenditure have been made and more funds are being expected from the federal government besides revenue generated within.

At the state level, a lot of ghost workers that had inflated the wage bill have been “sent to where they belong”. Ostentatious living and reckless spending by government officials have been greatly pruned.
