U.S. Under Secretary to visit Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon over insurgency

The Unites States of America’s Under Secretary for Civilian Security,
Democracy, and Human Rights Sarah Sewall is scheduled to visit Nigeria
over insurgency and others issues.

During the trip, she is also scheduled to visit Chad, and Cameroon
between October 25 and November 3, 2016.

The visit was announced in a press statement from the U.S. office of
the spokesperson made available to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to the statement, issues of  related to civilian security,
with an emphasis on the fight against Boko Haram would be discussed by
the US officials and her host leaders.

Other issues that would be focused on, the statement added include
countering violent extremism more broadly, and the dire humanitarian
and stabilisation needs in the Lake Chad Basin region.

“The Under Secretary will be in Nigeria to meet with representatives
from government, civil society, and the international community. She
is expected to raise urgent humanitarian and stabilisation challenges,
along with the need for a political resolution to the ongoing crisis
in the Niger Delta Region.

“She will also meet with women and girls who had been captured by Boko
Haram to learn about their unique challenges returning and
reintegrating into society,” the statement reads in part.

The envoy according to the statement will meet with inter-faith and
civil society leaders about their role in countering corruption,
refuting violent ideologies, and reducing religious and communal
tensions.

“The Under Secretary will also travel to Chad to meet representatives
from government, civil society and the United Nations to discuss Boko
Haram, associated humanitarian challenges, and countering violent
extremism more broadly.
