Osun Students petitions IGP, Ajimobi over LAUTECH crisis

By Maxwell Adeyemi Adeleye

The National Association of Osun State Students’ (NAOSS) has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Ibraheem Idris, and the Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimonbi, over the safety of the Osun State indigenes residing in Ogbomoso.

In a petition by the NAOSS President, Bashiru Oladejo, and the Secretary, Seun Ayoola, the student body expressed concern over alleged persistent attack on the students and staffs of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, who are Osun indigenes.

The NAOSS said the prevailing circumstances in Ogbomosho with the reports of “incessant attacks” on Osun indigenes over the ownership tussle of LAUTECH require urgent attention of the IG to secure the life and properties of affected people in the area.

According to association, despite assurance from both Osun and Oyo state governments on safety of lives our Osun students and staff, the reality in Ogbomosho is that Osun indigenes are continuously suffering humiliation, assault and harassment from sponsored thugs in the town.

The letter read in part: “Despite the assurances from various quarters to protect Osun indigenes our people are continuously living in serious apprehension and fear of attacks in a coordinated efforts to chase them away from our collective patrimony.

“We are compelled to cry to the inspector general of police and Oyo state government to protect our people especially the staff and students of the university who have been living in Ogbomosho for decades. For your information, some notorious sponsored thugs are making life more difficult for our people in the town, there residences, business and other belongings are under serious treats.

“On daily basis, we are receiving reports of attack from the students and staffs which has forced Osun indigenes to desert their home, we considered this as unjust, criminal and violation of the rights and privileges of the students and staffs.

“To complicate the issue unexpectedly, the attack is being coordinated by some individuals and associations especially the so called Ogbomoso parapowho have been persistently threatening our people. We, therefore, called on the IG and Governor Ajimobi to urgently arrest the situation by providing adequate security of live and property  for our people.”
