Assembly Urges Kogi Govt. to Provide Potable Water for Rural Communities

By Maxwell Adeyemi Adeleye

The Kogi House of Assembly on Wednesday called on the State Government to solve the perennial water shortage especially in rural areas across the state in view of the approaching dry season.
This call followed the adoption of a motion moved by Pedro Obaro (PDP-Mopamuro), appealing to the government to urgently address water needs of rural dwellers.
Obaro said in Lokoja on Tuesday that there was no welfare service that could impart more positively on the daily life of the people and the citizenry than water.
He said the state government had the responsibility to provide potable water for people, the challenges associated with the effort notwithstanding.
The law maker attributed failure of boreholes in most rural areas to lack of maintenance.
He urged government to synergise with the Rural Water and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), and UNICEF Master Trainers to train rural people on pump repairs and maintenance.
”These Master Trainers should be empowered and sent to the local government areas to train the people on pump repairs and maintenance after the boreholes had been sunk.
”This will enable members of the community to maintain and repair the boreholes themselves if the need arises instead of waiting until the government sends engineers for repairs”, he said.
Seconding the motion, Godwin Osiyi (PDP-Ogori-Magongo), said water was life and described the motion as timely especially against the approaching dry season with the attendant scarcity of water.
Victor Omofaiye (PDP-Ijumu) and Ndako Idris (PDP-Lokoja II), while supporting the motion, urged that the boreholes be dug in all the 21 council areas of the state.
Following the adoption of the motion through voice vote, Speaker of the House, Alhaji Umar Imam directed the Standing Committee on Water Resources to liaise with the Water Resources Ministry to ensure implementation.
