Open University Approves Study Centre For Prisoners In Gombe

By Maxwell Adeleye

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has approved establishment of a study centre for prisoners in Gombe.
Alhaji Ahmadu Adamu, the Comptroller of Prisons  in Gombe, made this known when the state Gov. Ibrahim Dankwambo  visited some inmates as part of activities to mark the state`s 20th anniversary on Monday.
According to him, the gesture would enable inmates who have met university admission requirements to have university education while serving their prison terms.
Adamu said that NOUN also waved registration and other fees for the inmates.
The comptroller appealed to the governor to give prisoners more opportunities to benefit from government programmes.
Responding, the governor gave the assurance of speedy dispensation of justice in the state.
He hoped that the approval of the study centre would ensure that prisoners continued education while serving jail terms.
Dankwambo called on the inmates to take advantage of the opportunity to be educated to be able to contribute to societal development when out of jail.
He promised to provide shuttle buses for them to  attend lectures.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report that, during the visit, the governor directed the state commissioner for justice to ensure trial of inmates with minor offences before October.
