Sokoto state’s bid to generate income from its leather works from the international market received a boost when the Nigerian Investment Promotions Commissions (NIPC) said it is working with the state government to realise set objectives.

The acting Executive Secretary of the commission, Hajiya Ladi Katagum, who spoke when she paid a courtesy visit on Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, said the potential of the leather industry is enormous, and the country needs to tap into it.

She said in order to realise their mandate of promoting Nigeria’s abundant investment opportunities and attract beneficial capitals into the economy, the NIPC will continue its collaboration with state governments to collate the investment potentials in their area to market them to both local and foreign investors.

According to her, many states have shown willingness to work with NIPC because of its expertise in the area of attracting investment.

In his remarks, Tambuwal said his administration has given the leather industry all the attention it deserves, and had recently drawn experts from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) who visited the state recently to interact with stakeholders.

“We welcome NIPC’s interest in this endeavour and together, we will work to fully explore the potential in the sector for the benefit of our state and the country,” the Governor added.

Tambuwal announced the setting up of a committee that will liaise with the NIPC to continue discussion on the issue.

Members of the committee include the state Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, the state Commissioner of Commerce, Trade and Investment, Commissioner of Information and the state Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture as well as the DG of the Sokoto Small and Medium Scale Enterprises Development Agency (SOSMEDA).
