PDP kicks as INEC bows to pressure to shift Edo poll

By Olaolu Oladipo, Lagos

Indications have emerged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may have decided to shift the governorship poll in Edo State scheduled for Saturday. This is just as the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on INEC not to shift the poll, saying doing so would run contrary to the provisions of the Electoral Act and the constitution.

INEC had been under intense pressure from the Nigeria Police Force and the Directorate for State Security (DSS) to shift the poll over they (the security agencies) tagged as security concerns occasioned by planned attempt by militants to attack the state.

As at the time of filing this report, INEC had not made any categorical statement on the issue but it is believed that the commission would shift the election arising from the prompting of the security agencies.

Reacting to the possibility of a postponement, the publicity officer of the interim caretaker committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye stated that INEC should ensure that the date earlier fixed for the poll remains sacrosanct.

According to a statement from the PDP, “The call for the postponement of the Election by top hierarchy of the security agencies predicated on alleged security threat was a less than ingenious attempt to buy time for the APC which is clearly heading for a major electoral catastrophe on Saturday.

“It is shameful and indeed a major constitutional breach for the security agencies to act in concert with the APC to truncate an Election that had been planned for months. Nigerians were not deceived by the obvious concoctions of the security agencies whose performances during elections have been less than average since the advent of the Buhari Administration.

“Indeed they have become instruments in the hands of the Ruling Party to harass, intimidate and punish opponents.”
