Pensioners beg Buhari over unpaid arrears, others

By Ismaila Akanji, Ibadan

Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to resolve the issues of non-payment of backlog of pension arrears to its members across the country.

National President of NUP, Dr Abel Afolayan who spoke on Wednesday in Ibadan while addressing newsmen at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), secretariat said non-completion of screening/verification exercise has been responsible for non-payment of their pension arrears.

Afolayan who was represented by National Vice-President, Southwest, Alhaji Lateef Adegoke said, “We see PTAD as a government agency willing to assist pensioners in ameliorating their sufferings but government need to give them necessary wherewithal such as provision of necessary funds to complete the exercise and pay the arrears due to genuine and cleared pensioners.

“As at now, only two zones out of six geo-political zones have been completed. The excuse of PTAD is that without completing the verification exercise in all the zones/states payment of the outstanding arrears would not be feasible.”

Afolayan appealed to government to fast track provision of necessary funds to complete the task and immediately make arrangements to pay the arrears.
