Economic hardship: Drama as woman blocked Buhari’s convoy in Edo

By Our Correspondent

A mild drama ensued on Tuesday as a physically challenged woman halted the presidential convoy from gaining entry into the venue of the mega rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benin City, Edo State capital.

The incidence occurred when President Muhammadu Buhari was making his way into the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in the ancient city after he had led a delegation of party officials to pay a courtesy call on the Crown Prince of Benin, Prince Ehenende Erediuawa in his palace.

An eye witness, Chijioke Anyacho told BLACKFACE that the yet to be identified woman in wheelchair made a daring attempt at a place close to the State House of Assembly complex when she wheeled herself in front of the first vehicle in the convoy  halting movement by almost two minutes.

Anyacho recounted the incidence on his facebook page wall, “I was beside the state House of Assembly by Airport Road Juncture, the only side without any military presence……just a hand full of unarmed policemen and civil defense.

“Soon two Hilux Jeep with a ROAD CLOSED sign painted on top was coming with speed and the security personnel immediately ordered everyone to move to the walk way and not cross the road. In less than 60 seconds, the president’s convoy starts appearing from the curved corner of Airport Road, they were not on the usual neck breaking speed that is the custom of Nigerian political class.’ He said.

He added that the movement of the convoy was slow enough prompting the woman to make the daring move.

“As the convoy gets close to the House of Assembly complex, this woman on wheelchair appears from no where and starts wheeling herself right across the road. The Jeep in front stops immediately.” He said.

He said the action prompted the driver of the pilot car to stop but when the security men tried to get her out of the way, she held on to one of them prompting a mild commotion.

He continued, saying “Angry looking Mopol (anti-riot policemen) soon jumped downed from one of the Hilux van and charged toward the Jeep in from to know why it stopped suddenly, same time a policeman dashed for the woman on the wheelchair and pulled her back.”

The woman grabbed the uniform of the policeman by the collar refusing to let go, saying, “Una know as i take dey eat…I no dey fit buy food again…Buhari no go pass..make una leave me make I die.”

The security men held her down to pave the way for the convoy to pass her bye to the venue of the programme.
