7th Year remembrance: Human rights group urges FG to immortalize Gani Fawehinmi

Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Organisation, GAFAMORG, has restated the need for Federal Government to immortalize the late human rights’ defender and legal icon, Chief Gani Fawehinmi for his immense contributions to the struggle for democratic rights, anti-corruption crusade, and other vices in Nigeria.

GAFAMORG, a non-governmental organisation with the core objective of promoting the ideals of the great nationalist and pan Africanist , late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, was established shortly, after his demise on September 5th, 2009,  7 years ago.

Chairman of the organization, Ayodele Akele, made the call yesterday, at a media parley in Lagos, as part of activities to commemorate the seventh year memorial of Fawehinmi.

According to Akele, the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has been championing the crusade against social vices such as; corruption and other forms of human rights abuses, hence, the need to immortalize his name.

“In memory and honour of indefatigable Gani, it is imperative to remember him for those things he would have done, battles he would have fought on behalf of the masses, the several articles he would have written challenging the unjust decisions of the government of the day.”

He stressed that the importance of preserving the memory of hero of the downtrodden masses, late Fawehinmi could not be overemphasized.

The group demands the renaming of  the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission, Abuja as Gani Fawehinmi Human rights House and establishment of Gani Fawehinmi Freedonm Square in Abuja, as a square where aggrieved Nigerians, Non Governmental Organisations, NGOs, among others can gather peacefully without molestation to protest and ventilate their angers over unpopular issues.
