Nigerian doctors in Saudi Arabia begin free eye surgery for 500 persons

By Ismaila Akanji, Ibadan

Nigerian doctors based in Saudi Arabia under the banner of the Al-Basar International Foundation, on Friday commenced free eye surgery on no fewer than 500 persons in Ibadan, Oyo state.A member of the group, Dr Qaasim Badamaasi told newsmen in Ibadan that the exercise was annual by the group, adding that the eye camp would last for six days.

He said the initiative was been carried out by the group in collaboration with the Ministry of Health in the state.

According to him, the free eye screening is an intervention programme aimed at reducing blindness prevalent in different communities across the country.

Cataract is a leading cause of blindness in Nigeria and the prevalence is not restricted to the northern states only.

The aim is to bring succour to those who cannot ordinarily afford the cost of orthodox treatment. We are calling on the government at all levels to promote policies and programmes that can further enhance and strengthen eye care delivery in the country.

“Blindness is one of the major public health problems in the country and the free screening is a form of intervention measure,” he said.
