Calabar Rovers’ players protest non-payment of salaries, match bonuses

Players of Rovers Football Club of Calabar have staged a protest over the non-payment of their match bonuses, allowances and 17 months’ salaries.The team’s Captain, Moses Asari, said the protest that took place in Calabar, the state capital was staged by the players to express their frustration regarding the excuses from government officials over the non-payment of their emolument.

Asari said, “Honestly, we are tired. For the past 17 months, we have not received any salary or match bonus. `The players are not happy. That was the reason for our protest to the Governor’s Office,’’ Asari said.

He, however, disclosed that the state’s Commissioner for Sports, Asu Okang, had promised to discuss their matter with the governor, Ben Ayade.

“The commissioner said we should give him up till Monday, and he has assured us that something positive will be done. We are waiting for him until Tuesday. After that day, whatever happens, we will decide the next line of action,’’ the team captain said.

When contacted for the club’s reaction, its Media Officer, Oqua Etim, said the club management had not said anything regarding the matter
