Academy targets young tennis players at grassroots

By Femi Adefioye, Lagos

The founder of St. John’s Tennis for Boys and Girls, Mrs Blessing Egwu, founder has stated that the academy will organise a programme targeted at discovering talented young tennis players at the grassroots.

Speaking with newsmen on Friday, she stated that the programme would focus on children with special talent, to guide them toward becoming professional stars in the game.

She explained that the programme would target children from three years and above, and would hold monthly at the National Tennis Centre, Abuja.

Egwu said the Academy would partner with the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), local and foreign sponsors, as well as certified coaches.

“Boys and girls will be trained and equipped with basic materials for the sports, career development in self-determination, behaviour modification, self-esteem, motivation and inspirational skills to conquer psychological fear in athletes during competition.

“With sponsorship, outstanding athletes who need immediate and sustained attention will receive adequate training from professional sports consultants.

“The academy will ensure that the training programme presents and encourage the spirit of competition, self-determination and self-confidence in all the participants.”

Egwu said that Nigeria must target the grassroots to discover and nurture talents to represent the nation in the next Olympics.

“What the federation has been doing before now is going abroad to fish ready-made talents, while neglecting the abundance of raw talents in the country. We do not recognize our best,’’ she said.
