Group seeks transparent party primaries in Ondo governorship primaries

By Olaolu Oladipo, Lagos

A group, the Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate (CPPM) has called on all the political parties vying for the governorship seat in Ondo state to abide by the tenets of democracy in the conduct of the primaries to choose their gubernatorial candidates.

In a statement issued by the Executive Director of the CPPM, Mr. Nelson Ekujumi on Tuesday, the group urges the parties not to do things that would stifle fairness, transparency and freedom of choice in the process of conducting primaries in the political parties.

Appraising the process so far, Ekujumi in the statement wrote, “For some time now, the undemocratic practices in the internal affairs of the political parties in choosing their candidates for elections has become a recurring and disturbing development which has led to internal crisis and at times, defection  to other parties by aggrieved members.

“While one cannot rule out the influence of inducements in deciding the direction in which delegates could be swayed, may we appeal to all legitimate delegates for the parties primaries, to put the long term interest of the long suffering people of Ondo state upper most in their consideration when casting their votes for the gubernatorial aspirant of the party to fly its flag at the election on November 26th, 2016.”
