Enugu police begins manhunt for killer armed robbers

By Obinna Achi, Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has placed its personnel on red alert with a vow to track down an armed gang that killed two policemen at New Haven area of Enugu, the state capital on Sunday. The killed include an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr. Otunji Philip and a sergeant, Manne Wilson, who were on duty at a stop and check  point by Ascot Hotel near New Haven Junction when the gunmen operating in a Toyota Camry car attacked them at about5pm.

One other policeman reportedly escaped unhurt.

Spokesman for the command, SP Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the incident in a press statement, said the police “have commenced trail of the suspects.”

He said that the yet to be identified gun men shot directly on the policemen, which resulted to the instant death of an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Otunji Philip and later the death of one sergeant, Manne Wilson.”

Amaraizu stated that “the State commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ojukwu while commiserating with the families of the deceased officers has equally expressed displeasure on the incident.

“Attacking police means attacking peace; the machinery is already in place to unmask those behind the dastardly act.

“The state command will not relent in the bid to ensure the safety and security of the citizenry.”
