Police IGP beefs up security ahead of Kogi, Imo rerun polls

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim K. Idris NPM, has directed Commissioners of Police in charge of Imo and Kogi States to coordinate security operations during the conduct of the re-run senatorial elections in the command areas on Saturday.A statement from the Force Headquarters obtained on Friday stated that security arrangements should be put in place to cover elections.

Elections are to be held in Imo North Senatorial District and Kogi East Senatorial District of the two states just as the Houses of Assembly re-run elections will also be taking place on the same date in the two affected states.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer (PPPRO), “As part of the measures aimed at guaranteeing a hitch-free and credible electioneering process during the Re-run elections, the Inspector-General of Police has graciously approved the deployment of additional Police Mobile Force personnel, Counter Terrorism Units and Conventional Policemen from States contiguous to Imo and Kogi States, to be deployed to all identifiable flash/vulnerable points, and other strategic locations within the Senatorial Districts where the Re-run elections will take place.

“The Commissioners of Police in the two States are under strict instructions from the Inspector-General of Police to provide adequate security for INEC Staff, Election materials, the electorates, election observers and other individuals and bodies that have statutory roles to play in the conduct of the elections at the polling booths, collation centres and at INEC offices throughout the election period.”
