Former council workers barricade Bayelsa assembly complex over sack

Ex-civil servants attached to Southern Ijaw Local Government of Bayelsa State have taken their protest to the state’s House of Assembly complex.

The aggrieved former workers on Sunday were protesting their sack by the council’s caretaker committee Chairman, Mr. Joshua Macaiver on Sunday by barricading entry into the complex.

They blocked the entrance to the complex and demanded that their employments should be reinstated with their names returned to the payroll.

According to them, they only got to know that their names were removed from the payroll when employees from the council who were owed over eight month salaries were asked to go and collect their January payment.

The affected workers were employed in 2008 and had received salaries even throughout the first tenure of Governor Seriake Dickson until recently when Macaiver, a former ex-militant leader laid them off.

The workers were led by Mr. Diezieaha ThankGod, the chairman of the council in 2008 when the victims were employed under former Governor Timipre Sylva’s administration.
