LASIEC boss task commissioners on free, fair polls

Chairman of Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) Hon. Justice Ayotunde Adeyoola Philips (rtd) has tasked commissioners to ensure that they conduct free, fair and transparent polls in the forthcoming local government elections. 

She gave the charge at a meeting with Electoral Commissioners and Permanent Secretary of the Commission in Lagos on Monday. 

She said commission will soon embark on the tour of the 57 Local Government, Local Council Development Areas of the state, adding that it was necessary for all hands to be on deck in order to have a successful and credible local government election. 

According to her, the purpose of the tour is to enable members to familiarize themselves with the terrain ahead of preparation for the conduct of the next elections into the 57 Local Government/ Local Council Development Areas of the state. 

She added that the tour would also afford the commission the opportunity to assess the state of offices allocated to Electoral Officers of the Commission in the various Local Government and Local Council Development Areas. 

Phillips assured that the Commission would conduct free, fair and credible elections into the Local Government Councils of the state. 

The Chairman urged them to be honest and transparent in their operations so as to enable the Commission achieves its mission of conducting credible and acceptable elections. 

Philips warned that the commission would not tolerate laziness and other forms of misconduct from staff, urging them to support and cooperate with the commission in its drive to conduct free, fair and credible elections into the Local Government and Local Council Development Areas of the state. 

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Olumide Lawal, pledged the support and cooperation of staff to the commission, stressing that the staff would redouble their efforts in order to assist the commission in achieving its objective. 

It would be recalled that the new Chairman and four new Electoral Commissioners of the Commission were sworn –in recently by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
