The Federal Government has added Thursday as public holiday for Muslim faithfuls to commemorate the festival of Eid-el-Fitr.

The Federal Government had declared Tuesday and Wednesday 5th and 6th of July as public holiday to mark the festival that is usually celebrated to mark the end of 30-day fast by Muslims.

A statement by the Minister for Interior, Lt.-General Abdulrahaman Danbazzau added that the additional day is sequel to the directive by Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar III’s directive stated that the festival should hold on Wednesday.

“Following the directive by the President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, to the effect that the Ramadan fast continues today as a result of the non-sighting of the moon, the Federal Government has declared Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th July, 2016 as Public Holiday.

The statement added that “In making the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, the Honourable Minister of Interior, Lt Gen. (Rtd) Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau, urged Nigerians to use this period of sober reflections to ensure harmony, unity and peaceful co-existence.”
