Strike: Ekiti workers defy union leaders, refuse to resume work

By Sunday Aloba, Ado-Ekiti

Government workers in Ekiti State have shunned their offices on Monday following the suspension of a one-month strike action embarked upon to press home the payment of five month arrears of salaries.

The strike was suspended on Friday after the state government and Labour reached s seven-point agreement.

Very few of the workers reported for duty at their offices while teachers stayed away from public primary and secondary schools apparently on instruction from their union, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

Pupils in primary schools and students of secondary schools were seen returning home because the teachers did not return to work as they insisted that they would stay at home until their salaries are paid.

Male pupils were seen playing football on their school fields whole others roamed the streets.

Many workers have alleged that the labour leaders have been compromised to suspend the strike, an allegation denied by the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ade Adesanmi.

Adesanmi challenged anyone with having any evidence to come out with same to prove that he and other labour leaders were bribed by the government.

“I didn’t sign the pact with government culminating in this resumption because I compromised, I signed because of the fear that this allocation may be spent without the payment of worker salaries.

“The same workers we were fighting for were coming to work during the strike to assist government in spending monies that could have been kept and added to the current allocation to pay workers. This is highest level of wickedness and prosperity will judge all of us.”

But an interest group in the state workforce, the Enlightened Workers Forum (EWF), alleged that the labour leaders were bribed to the tune of N10 million to agree with the government to pay one month salary and suspend the strike.
