I remain Abia governor, says Ikpeazu

By Olaolu Oladipo, Lagos

The embattled Abia State governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has urged the people of the state to remain calm over the judgment sacking him from office.

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Monday delivered a judgment in favour of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Mr. Uche Oga against the governor challenging his eligibility to contest the election.

Specifically, Ogah in the case alleged that the governor falsified tax receipts to be able to contest the primaries of the PDP in December, a claim the court upheld with an order for Ikpeazu to vacate office.

Reacting to the judgment, Ikpeazu, who said that he has faith in the judiciary and rule of law, added that he will appeal the ruling as he has instructed his lawyers to file an appeal immediately against the said judgment.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Enyinnaya Appolos noted that having served as an appointee of the state government from 2011 to 2014 his taxes were deducted at source, and when he had need of his tax clearance in 2014, he applied to the Abia State Board of Internal Revenue, and was duly issued with his tax receipts for the period in question.

He maintained that he remains the Governor of the state according to law and will await the final determination of the matter by the appellate courts.
