The Nigeria Under-20 international announced on Instagram he had finally completed his move to Arsenal earlier this week and has been offered the chance to follow in the footsteps of Kanu, who scored 44 goals in 198 appearances for the club, winning two Premier League titles and two FA Cups.
“Arsenal have informed us that Kelechi has been handed the No.25 jersey. He was trying to get that number because of Kanu, so he’s happy they gave it to him,â€Â head of the ASJ Academy, Emeka Amajiriaku, told allnigeriasoccer.com.
Nwakali came to Arsenal’s attention after he won the Adidas golden ball at the FIFA U-17 World Cup last year and the Gunners had been close to agreeing a deal for his compatriot Samuel Chukwueze, who now seems destined for a move to Porto, instead.
The Arsenal No.25 number is currently owned by Carl Jenkinson who has spent the last two seasons on loan at West Ham. The former Charlton right back hasn’t played since January after he suffered a serious knee injury.
The England international last appeared for Arsenal, meanwhile, on the final day of the 2013-14 Premier League season when he scored his first goal for the club in 2-0 win over Norwich at Carrow Road.
