Nigeria loses 4,031mw to worsening gas supply to IPP

By Abimbola Fashakin, Lagos

Findings have revealed that the nation loses a total of 4, 031 megawatts to the worsening destruction of oil and gas assets in the Niger Delta region of the country

The Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) on Tuesday said the nation lost 4,031 Mega Watts (MW) to gas constraint and that the situation degenerated to lack of sufficient gas to fire the 25 gas power plants in the country.

NESI also added that besides, the three hydro stations had some constraints while the combined power generation of all the 28 stations on Tuesday produced a total of 2, 101mw.

It gave the breakdown as follows:  Kainji 213mw, Jebba 267mw, Shiroro 59mw, Egbin 128mw, Sapele I 11mw, Delta 75mw, Afam IV-V 0mw.

Geregu 68mw, Omotosho I 36mw, Ololushogo I 0mw, Geregu NIPP 0mw, Sapele NIPP 26mw, Alaoji NIPP 195mw, Olorushogo NIPP 0mw, Omotosho NIPP 0mw, Odukpani NIPP 41mw, Ihvobo NIPP 0mw and  Okpai 145mw, Afam I 392mw, Ibom 70mw, A.E.S 0mw, ASCO 0mw, Omoku 17mw, Trans Amadi 0mw, Rivers IPP 0mw, Egbin ST6 29mw, and Gbarain 99mw.

26 turbines were function on the day under review.

According to the daily summary of performance of the electricity market that NESI released Wednesday, the Nigerian Electricity System Operator (SO) which is an arm of the Transmission

Company of Nigeria (TCN) sent out 2101mw.

It said that the market lost 466MW to line constraint, adding that it lost 380MW owing to water management constraint.

On the day under review, the power sector lost about N2,341, 000, 00 due to constraints.

The power sector, according to NESI, lost the estimated equivalent of N2,341, 000, 000 on June 07 2016 due to constraints.

NESI said that : “On June 07 2016, average energy sent out was 2,101mw/hour (down by 321Mwh/h), The reported gas constraint was 4031MW. The reported line constraint was 466mw . The water management constraint was 380MW. The power sector lost the estimated equivalent of N2,341, 000, 000 on June 07 2016 due to constraints.”
