Association organises open swimming tourney in Lagos

As part of its efforts to further promote swimming as a form of sporting activity among residents, the leadership of the Lagos State Swimming Association has organised an open water swimming competition in Lagos.

The event, which took place at the popular Regatta Village along the popular Queens Drive in Ikoyi on Sunday attracted young and budding swimmers from both with and outside the state.

Vice Chairman of the association, Mr. Lanre Saidi in a  chat with newsmen that the event was the first of such activities to be undertaken by the association to further popularise the sport in the state.

Saidi lamented that the sport had suffered so much neglect in the past owing to lack of visionary leadership in  the past but added that the current leadership of the association is poised to reverse the trend.

“This open water championship is the beginning of the series of programmes that we have lines up to resuscitate the sport that has become more or less moribund,” he said.

In all, no fewer than 200 swimmers participated in the event that was categorised into the male and female segment in a race that saw participants endure a three kilometre race inside the open lagoon between Ozumba Mbadiwe Street and Queens Drive.

Benson Philips led in the boys category was followed by John Ibiwere and Orouna Vcitor in that order.

In the female category was won by Faith John.
