Trade unions in UI groan over unpaid salaries

By Ismaila Akanji, Ibadan

Trade unions in the University of Ibadan under the banner of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), have appealed to the Federal government to please intervene in their plight of non-full payment of salaries.

The unions at a press conference on Sunday addressed by the Chairman of the local chapter of SSANU, Comrade Wale Akinremi said life has not been easy for the workers since the shortfall payment of salaries by authorities of the university.

According to him, the development has impacted the school system because the workers are psychologically unbalanced due to heavy indebtedness of bank loans and inability to take care of their homes.

He added that the university workers have been enduring the situation since December while their counterparts in other universities who are in similar circumstance have resolved the issue and have been paid.

Akinremi wondered why only workers of the University of Ibadan are experiencing hardship coupled with lack of incentives while he said the workers are not willing to go on strike but if situation don’t improve, they willing resort to strike.

Also speaking, the Chairman NASU of the University, Comrade Oluwasegun Arojo said the shortfall has been accumulated that there’s no assurance that FG will able to pay them.

He added that the loans taken from banks are yet to be remitted and therefore have mounted huge pressure on the workers even that it’s deteriorating to bad working condition.

Arojo said the university workers have reliably confirmed that the shortfall from the Federal government is 92% but the workers are only receiving only 50% of salaries. He therefore appealed to the Federal government to please intervene before things gets out of hand.
