Naval chief lauds maritime partnership between Nigeria, America

Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas has commended the partnership between the Nigeria Navy and its counterpart from the United States of America (USA).


Appraising the scope of the partnership, Ibas stated that it has become a fruitful one that has helped the service build impressive capacity in the areas of training and ship acquisition.


The naval chief spoke in Abuja when the Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) General David Rodriquez led a delegation to the Naval Headquarters.


Receiving his guests, Ibas said AFRICOM’s training engagement with the Nigerian Navy’s Special Boat Service (NNSBS) operatives have been of immense contribution to the successes recorded by the outfit in martime security and counter insurgency operation in the North East.


He urged the AFRICOM to further assist the Nigerian Navy in the areas of intelligence gathering, surveillance, supply of ship’s spare and training.


He said that the current joint exercise OBAGAME Express conducted yearly is achieving its objectives.


He reiterated the resolution of the Nigerian Navy to deploy more ships to maintain the current record of sea patrol in order to tackle security challenges.


Earlier in his response, the Commander of AFRICOM, General Rodriquez pledged that the United States would continue to render military assistance to the Nigerian Navy, especially in personnel training as a way of enhancing capacity to tackle maritime threats and insurgency in the country.
