FG set to fix Ilorin-Jebba, says Fashola

Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola has declared that the Federal Governor is set to fix and ensure timely maintenance of Ilorin-Jebba road.

 

Fashola stated this when he visited Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello on Tuesday in Minna shortly after his visit to Zungeru Hydro Power Dam.

‘‘We are making 60km journey that should take 40 minutes, we are making it at one and half to three hours.

“As I said to those truck drivers along Ilorin-Jebba road, staying there for four days if they have the opportunity for a way where they will pay, tolling it would have been better than losing four days and their perishable goods there. We will fix the roads first and we must go back to maintenance.

He insisted that when the road is fixed, trailer drivers must find a place to park their trailers off the road adding that the indiscriminate parking of trailers and heavy-duty trucks on the road shoulders was also responsible to the quick depreciation of on our roads.

According to him, to the federal and state governments must work together to establish the right of highway and as well protect the highway set back, which he said will lead to sanity on the roads.

Fashola further lamented the inability of past government to develop the country with the vast resources available pointing out that there is a lot to do with fewer resources.

“There was a lot the nation would have done but failed to do at the time when the nation was earning over 100 dollars per barrel of crude oil a day, and what we failed to do then, we now have to do a lot more with less resources,’’ he said.

Fashola then commended Gov. Abubakar Sani Bello for intervening in the compensation settlement that has stalled work at the Zungeru Hydro Power Dam construction for the past two years adding that with the engagement with 886 persons to work in the dam site construction, economic activities of the state will get a boost.

In his response, Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello who explained to the Minister the poor state of the road lamented that the state which has the largest road network have suffered neglect over the years as its road network have been neglected.
