A former Minister of Defence, Lt.-General Theophilus Danjuma (rtd.) has stated that the country would need about N2 trillion for what he termed ‘short term intervention’ for the reconstruction of the North Eastern part of the country.

The region has been ravaged by insurgent activities being carried out by members of the Boko Haram Islamist sect in the last seven years.

During the period, the sect has killed over 20,000 people just as it has also displaced an estimated 2.5 million people mostly women, children and the elderly across Abuja, Adamawa, Gombe, Yobe, Borno, and Bauchi.

Borno State has the highest number of 1,650,799 people displaced as at October 2015 with over 1 million people taking refuge in neighbouring countries of Cameroun, Chad and Niger under dehumanising conditions.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, Danjuma who is the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on North East  Initiatives (PCNI) said the rebuilding of the North East requires considerable planning and coordination.

“Rebuilding the North East would demand maximum cooperation and resources, especially in the most affected states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. It would involve the massive reconstruction of physical infrastructures, some of which have been totally destroyed in these areas” he said.

Earlier, the President of the Nigeria Defence College Alumni Association, Brigadier General  J.N. Temlong (Rtd) said the government and intenational partners have committed huge resources towards ending the Boko Haram insurgency. He said the crisis has cost the country a lot in terms of officers and men.

The theme of this year’s National Security seminar is “internally displaced persons (IDPs) and Post Conflict Peace Building in Nigeria”.
